What does the word DIVERSITY mean to you? I don't want a dictionary definition, I want YOUR thoughts and ideas. Nothing is right or wrong...just answer.
What does the word DISCRIMINATION mean to you? Same as above...
Have you ever felt victimized, judged or treated differently? Why?
Diversity to me is the acceptance and understanding of any and all people banning together to make sure they're accepted through their differences and similarities.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand discrimination to me would be the unfair treatments others put upon people because of their differences and never realize the similarities within one another.
All of my life I can say that I have been mistreated and or judged for being different. I was never the same of my peers within a standpoint of the way I think. On other notes I was exactly like my peers within background, but the relationships I had with my family and the ideals that I had with my own life made me feel completely different. People would question why I'd act the way I do and or think the way I think and the unfair treatment coincided with just exclusion and just overall ridicule over all being discriminated for the way I am has been with me for a long time. On the more traditional approach being discriminated for my race has never been something I've fully experienced. Being in the area I'm in I've never felt like I was ever seen to be different, but I've seen others be mistreated because of their own race being different from my own through multiple occasions and that's what makes me understand that the feeling of how unfair treatment within other races or just different people in general feel because I can always try to put it in my own perspective.
thank you for the thoughtful response, Averill!
ReplyDeleteDiversity to me means to have variations, differences in culture, customs, physical appearance, etc. But everyone is accepting of each other's differences and we embrace each other without trying to change anyone.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination is to treat someone differently based on differences, either culturally, physically or anything really.
I've never actually been discriminated against or judged, at least not enough for me to notice. I guess I was called white washed, or not Mexican enough when I was younger because I had "white" habits like eating healthy and actually liking school. But I was never really treated different because of it. It was more like my friends giving me shit every now and then. Though I guess I did get looked at differently when I was pregnant, mostly because I was still in high school. I did get a lot of special privileges I wasn't accustomed too like people getting up from their seats to let me sit down and I would get free monthly bus passes.
But as far as being treated differently or judged based on race or appearance, I haven't experienced that (yet). It helps that my name doesn't give away my ethnicity.
Diversity is a mix of varying people who may have different cultures or ethnicity.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination is to view and treat another as a lesser.
I know I should feel like a victim at times but I really don't care. What ever discrimination I have felt hasn't been really important to me. So what if some one thinks there is fault in those who are "diverse", screw them. If their morals are this messed up I don't really care for what comes out of them, like garbage- something unpleasant but you don't pay attention to it because trash is nothing more than trash.
Have you ever felt victimized, judged or treated differently? Why?
To me, diversity means different culture, different language, different race, and different appearance, etc. Even with these differences, we love and respect one another.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination to me means to discriminate against or judge another based on race, ethnicity, or appearance.
I have been treated differently when I first came to the U.S. just because I couldn't speak English, and that I was from a different country. My classmates would always make fun of my name and my height. I didn't like going to school because the students would always make me feel uncomfortable and scared. I always worried that they would make fun of me again the next day, and they did! I was also very quiet in all of my classes, and I didn't really participate in a class conversation. There was a group assignment in science class, and I was grouped with two other classmates. In my group, there was one boy and one girl. The girl was on her phone all the time, and the boy was the only one who worked on the assignment. I couldn't help him because I didn't understand what to do, and it was my second week of school in the U.S. He was very furious, and complained to the teacher that I didn't help him, but he didn't complain about the other girl at all. She speaks perfect English and was born in here. I was very scared, and thought to myself that is it because I was not born in the U.S. or I'm different from them. My first year of school in the U.S. was not a great year for me.
When I went to high school, I still see the same students who made fun of me and these two classmates in middle school. Some of them were in the same class as me. At this time, I can speak English and the students who used to make fun of me stopped making fun of me because I threatened them that I would tell the teachers and the office. And I had the same science class again with those two classmates. The girl didn't change at all and she still on her phone when we were doing a project. The boy could see that I worked really hard in class, and he later apologized me for the things he said in 8th grade.
I was very happy to hear from him, and I also understand that the students made fun of me because they didn't know anything about me. At that time, no one knows who Karen people are.
Diversity means differences. Differences in every aspect of a person's life. Discrimination means ignorance. We judge and push people/groups away without getting to know them, their personality, traditions, culture, religion, etcetera. Ignorance because we do not know anything about that person or group and yet we treat them like outsiders.
ReplyDeleteI honestly cannot say that I've because I was never confronted by the people but I heard things like Latinas are whores and they usually do not know who their baby's daddy is, etcetera. Also, that as children of illegal immigrants, the Gov. should remove our rights as American citizens to give our parents a lesson, and things like that.
It made me feel uncomfortable but never stopped me from achieving my goals, on the contrary, all those comments gave me the strength to thrive and to prove them wrong.
Diversity to me is people of different ethnicities and cultures. When I think of diversity I think of colored people, and people from different parts of the world. I love San Diego City College because it is so diverse. There are Latinos, Europeans, and African Americans etc. I think it is very important to understand and get to know people of different cultures and not discriminate.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination to me is an act of something that is unfair due to somebodies religion, race, gender, etc. It is important not to discriminate people because you never know what they are like. They might look different than you from the outside but in reality we are all the same in the inside. We are all humans.
I have been victimized, judged, and treated differently. When I was younger I was always put on the spot as being the bad kid. I felt as if I was never that good to advance in school because everybody constantly would put me down. My mother would always put me down and judge me instead of sitting down and talking to me the right way.
Diversity to me means the complete understanding of one or a group's differences , including opinions, traditions, skill set or history. To be diverse is to accept and utilize these differences for a common goal.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination to me would be the speculation towards someone or a group of people,
I've pretty much felt judged my whole life. Me and my mom moved around so much, i never felt as if i molded long relationships just small bits and chapters with people. I never felt as if i made an impact so my insecurities or anger would get the best of me . I think diversity and discrimination tie into being felt judged or victomized because when you look at it, if you are diverse you leave room for discrimination and if you are discriminatory you leave no room for diversity. Ever since I was 19, i noticed this mentality or "behavior from others" and tried to flip the energy which i have found very progressful and comforting.
Diversity means a combination of people from different backgrounds such as religion, ethnicity, country of origin, traditions, culture, etc. in the same environment or place.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination means being judged by someone because of physical traits or different background from what is considered "normal" or the standard from a certain place or region.
I can't remember a time where I was discriminated that could be considered extreme or as Jaimie said, not enough for me to notice.
when the word diversity is mentioned the first thing that comes up to mind is categories, the way humans decide to organize separation weather its in gender, race, age, etc.
ReplyDeletewhat discrimination means to me is the rude way to organize humans. its like just looking at someone without really knowing them & judging them for what they look like but not what they're really are.
yes, i get judged about almost every day. People can just straight out look at me & i know deep inside their saying things about me whether its by the way that i dress that seems too "inappropriate" or just the way i look. Almost every time i go to work i have someone tell me why i have my septum piercing that i'm smart enough to be doing things like that to myself, or others say you'll be much more beautiful if you didn't have it. i can easily get judged for my appearance overall. even with my tattoos its the same shit almost every time.
i have gotten treated differently, in high school, i was told i wouldn't be able to go to college since i was undocumented so when i had to see my counselor college was never a topic brought up. At that time it didn't get to me much but as i started really thinking about my future it really did get to me.
When I hear the word "Diversity" the first thing that come to mind is separation or classification of individual solely based on race and ethnicity background. I think the word "Discrimination" mean judging or treating someone differently based on their appearance, race, nationality, culture, language, beliefs, sexual orientation,gander...etc without really knowing the person on a personal level. Well I definitely feel like I've been judge by my personality and the way I look. uh "Why" I wish knew, but some people especially "girls" my age have this perception of me that I'm stuck-up,mean, or I think that I'm better than...
ReplyDeleteWhat I think diversity is, well I diversity is when you have more then just one race. Like our country is very divers in culture and religion not just Race. this makes us who we are. For me Discrimination is when someone judges you on a negative way, or when they are prejudice against you not by your ethnic background but for your gender. I have being judge in many situations. For example when I was at a at the hospital and the nurse assumed that I didn't spoke English because I'm Mexican and she left and brought an a translator so I could tell her what was wrong with me. Also I think I've been treated differently in my own culture, for some reason older people think because I speak English makes me better then them also many of my family in Mexico treat my family as a whole in a very different way. They assume that since I have papers I must have money and they should please us. I think that no matter were you go people are going to judge you either in a good way or bad, also people are going to treat you differently but is up to us to be the bigger person and just ignore it.
ReplyDeleteDiversity in a simple word to me is difference, just not have the same thing repeated over and over again to me.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination to me is getting picked/judged/put down on something that makes you different from other people.
I can say yes to all of the above, going through elementary was hell for me because it was about the same time that the terrorist attacks started and being muslim people would always throw me into the same categories as them just because of my religion. This behavior carried on through high school, but it was about that same time were I grew my voice so I started calling out people who had something to say about me, but I was very timid about it so I was never really taken seriously. I also remember that I would always be that one kid in the family that was just a little different from the rest they never really said anything but they would always stare me down and just be overly sarcastic with me. In my classes I was one of the few people that wasn't a certain race, but that really didn't change anything, because I always tried to be friendly to people so I made a couple of friends. Even within my own race I don't really have a lot of friends when it comes to that, because I was always looked at differently because I wasn't like a majority of the youth that was into the "thug life" or the other side of the youth that were religious. I was just in the middle trying fit in while trying to find myself. It wasn't hard but still weird because I would go to all of my family and religious gatherings being the little wallflower because there was just nothing for me to talk about with the others.
Diversity to me is a mix of different people from class, race, and gender people coming together that share different views and believes on life living or even interacting with each other.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination is to judge someone by their race class gender even their sexual preference

ReplyDeleteDiversity to me just means differences -- in culture, beliefs, ethnicity, height/sizes, anything that have different variations. God made people all with different eye, hair, and skin color, different laughs, etc. and that's really interesting and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination to me is when someone is ignorant of the equality of every human, and excludes a person or a people based on their faulty understanding of them.
Definitely have felt discriminated again. But just one example would be when I visited my bf (at the time) and his family during one winter, came back and overheard on Skype his mom saying, "Look, I don't have a problem that she's brown, she's asian. But I'm putting my foot down/drawing the the line if she was black."
From my perspective, diversity means being different. For example, we all have different roots, ethnicities, features, values, and believes. On the other hand, discrimination means treating someone differently is a negative way because of their ethnicity or background. I really cannot recall a moment where I was victimized, judged or treated differently.
ReplyDeleteDiversity: A mixture/ variety of things, categories, and people of different backgrounds and cultures etc.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination: When you favor something of different categories such as race, sex, age, looks, and religious beliefs
I have felt victimized before, many times by the fact that I am a girl/black/mexican, and also because I drove a red Cadillac that I always got pulled over for. It is something that I know I have to live with and have to over come.
Diversity to me means to have a big variety of differences whether in likes, thinking and way of livings. Discrimination to me means to be marginalized for a group because you do something different to that group, it does not necessarily need to be about color or genre. I have never felt victimized but I have been treated differently because of my accent, people would think that I am undocumented and would told me that I can’t do some things until they find out that I do have documents. E.g. getting my California ID.
