What has been the most positive experience so far at your service learning site? Do you feel your role their contributes to the mission and goals of the organization? (Do you KNOW the mission and goals of your agency??) If so, how? If not, what do you think you could do that would be more productive, or allow you to contribute more to the people you serve?
Will you stay at this site next year? Why or why not?
Well working in the library at San Diego high school I feel like in a way we are helping because, books are the foundation to education, but we are just the distributors. We are kind of like the drug dealers for books just waiting to give somebody their next fix of a good story or a info on a new hobby. In a way I am fulfilling the mission of the school because of the five schools located around the school we are the epicenter to provide the necessary tools for them to use to gain a better learning experience.
ReplyDeleteWhether I would stay next year is questionable I really like the access to the books and just being able to read them on the some down time, but I might go somewhere else maybe, just as a change of scenery.
The most positive experience that I have had at the Fleet is being able to help the children with the STEAM day projects. Helping the children make cars out of wood and race them down a slope was definitely worth my time. It was a rewarding day and I wish that I had more days like that at the fleet. I feel that my role there at the feel is contributing to the mission statement, although kids sometimes want to do things on their own and enjoy hand on experiences, I still put myself out there to have fun with the kids and enhance their questions toward science. To be more productive, I think that I could have more of a positive attitude because I get bored there. As far as staying there, I do not think I am going to because honestly it is something that I am not into. I sigh at the thought of being there. I would rather be at a site that has way more to do. Hands on things that make the time go by. Something that I would enjoy and would not mind going to 25 hours a month.
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience at Rosa Parks is that I have learn how to treat little kids in an educational way, I mean what to teach them and how to teach them in their first years of education. I don’t remember the mission or goal or the agency but I do believe that I am contributing to their standards because I do follow orders and do what I am asked to do. I honestly believe that I’ve been useful to my teachers because when I get to class, I get really busy right away. Yes, I would probably stay if my schedule for next semester interferes.
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience at my service site is being able to help little kids in their homework but also teach them new things or something different and easier to do their homework. I think I am contributing to their mission because the objective of the organization is to prepare students to succeed in college/education. By helping the kids do their homework, teaching them, and they knowing that I'm in college, I am helping and encouraging the new generations to go to college.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I won't be able to stay at BLCI next year because I am transferring to a university.
The most positive experience at my service site is to have the opportunity to assist the lab technician with anything that she needs help with. I learned many things from her when I go there. She taught me how to do strep test, flu test, pregnancy test, and more. She usually ask me to do the strep test and the pregnancy test. I also help her hold the patient's arm from moving when she draws the patient's blood. I'm always excited to go there because everyday is different. We can be very busy one day and the other day can be so slow. I am contributing to the mission and the goals of the organization because the site's mission is to deliver medical and mental care to thousands of children in the City Heights Community. By helping the lab technician, I feel like I'm one of the people who also help the children because I would help conduct some of the tests and report the results to the lab technician. I also assist the lab technician with blood draws, and it makes it easier for the lab technician to draw blood from moving children.
ReplyDeleteI will still volunteer at this site next year because I want to gain more experience working in the medical field.
The best experience i have had at my site is seeing middle schoolers grow as individuals. At the beginning of the year, most of them are too quiet and shy. Afraid to be heard because they believe the way they think is wrong. Now that the school year is ending and we have been working with them, that has seemed to change. Now, they speak their mind without the fear of what others might think. I do know our goa, which is to create young strong leaders into our society and i feel like we are succesful in doing so. Next year, i do plan on changing sites just to try something new. Working with the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs definitely isnt easy, but very rewardng at the end. Ive learned many skills which i can take with me into my job, class, or even everyday use.
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience I had at my site was actually sitting with some students and talking with them about them. Its really hard to connect with students and its such an accomplishment when you are able to wave and see a genuine smile. At SD High the main goal is to get people to learn and get their diplomas, but I feel the students aren't being growing from the education system. Just absorbing info and forgetting, never completing their thinking of what everything means to them as they mean to everything because they were never truly engaged by educators to truly grow, experience and learn. And that smile that some of the students have while I talk to them about them makes me feel I am doing something right by making them think of themselves as well as where they go and how beyond they may go.
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience has been to see the children learning everyday and seeing them in the right way to move on to the next level. I love working there and it's priceless all the child's care and love.when I started there they were kind of rude with me in their way because they wouldn't pay attention to me or listen to what I said but now it's very different I feel like if I was their teacher.I just feel like I'm a role model for some of the kids which makes me feel happy to know that I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.
ReplyDeleteI love my site and I think that I'm contributing to our mission, that states that every kid deserves an education. BLCI for me has been a great experience. Working with the kids every day and seeing them motivated to do well in school and thinking of their future makes me happy. I wish more and more people could go to BLCI because it's a great program, and that will help the community. One reason I a say why I feel that I'm doing a contribution to the program is because I get to know the students a lot more. Also helping them with their homework is a fundamental role that we as tutors have. Second, we are their role models and they look up to us, one because we're in college, second because they're willing to learn anything that will help them prepared for future challenges. I want to stay at BLCI because any help that we get from the community makes a great impact on our students, and because I've made a connection with each of my students and it want to see them grow
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience my service site is having the chance to work with such an amazing team @ Rosa Park Elementary pediatric school clinic. The kids are just a pleasure to be around and I am always excited go there then school.lol I absolutely feel like my role their contributes to the mission and goals of the organization, which is to create a positive school culture that is conducive to learning; set high standards and accountability for learning; facilitate and implement an instructional program that maximizes student learning; and also their mission is to deliver high-quality medical and mental health services to all families in San Diego County, especially to lower income families.
ReplyDeleteThe most positive experience I've had at Rosa Parks Elementary School, it is working with the kids. They are such loving kids and put so much effort on staying focus on their activities. The mission of the school is to offer regular education, special education and gifted education based on their needs, in order to create successful children. I do feel like I am contributing to their mission and that I do provide a good service to the children. I usually work with English as a Second Language students, I help them start and finish their work, to stay focus (it is difficult to stay focus when you don't understand something), and to participate in class.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would like to stay in my site next year. I feel like I need something more challenging and a different experience. I would like to try another site.
The most positive experience i've had the cesar chavez service site is being apart of a on older culture and embracing it's history then applying it to today's lifestyle. I love seeing those kids learn about taking the power to the people through unity and voice, in a positive way. As the year goes by and like Beinto said those kids have come around since last summer to now, watching students turn into leaders feels good knowing you were apart of that growth especially when they trust you to guide them. That is our mission, developing youth leadership. I think I will stay at my site, despite the pros and cons because though time consuming, at this point i am getting ready to dive into my second year and hopefully have my own site without the programs advisers so we can cover more schools.
ReplyDeleteI work at San Diego High with multiple teachers. Helping kids out and seeing them enjoy art is really rewarding. I also like knowing that I make a difference by helping out my teachers who are already over worked and under paid. I'm free labor and my teachers are usually happy to see me. I feel I am contributing to the mission of the school because it's a public education facility and I am helping build the future by giving these kids extra attention. If I wasn't transferring this year I would so stay at SDHS because I love being able to spend time with my former teachers.
