Reflection Topic

Hey Scholars, sorry for the delay!

Please tell me what your ideal SERVICE LEARNING site would be. Speak to it in terms of population served, need it would meet, service you would provide. Please keep in mind that this is NOT an internship I am asking about...it is a community service site that would combine job skills, career readiness and community service all in one.

Then, let me know if you are planning, at this point, to stay at your service site next year, or if you are thinking of changing to another site and why?

Be ready for Fashion Idol!!

  1. My ideal service learning site would be an institution where I can develop my leadership skills and at the same time where I can have some experience in something related to the law , since Criminal Justice is the career that I want to pursue, to be able to get in touch with people from my community attending daily life issues related to vandalism or criminal reports. I personally think this would be a very great working environment for me to serve my community. Also to acquire experience related to my future career plans.

I am planning to look for a new site because I would like to get new experiences from another place. I would like to learn different things and I believe that I can get something different out of some other site.

  2. My ideal service learning site is a place where I can go and take care of animals for periods of times. I know that there are places where there can be many volunteers to go help care for animals, especially dogs and cats. What I have in mind particularly is a shelter with stray animals that need to be cared for while the animal control gathers them and stuffs them in cages. I've seen a shelter where it was raining and the cages where outside so all of the animals were wet and cold while crying out. Honestly, it brought tears to my eyes and I couldn't help but to go to each animal and let them know I was there. I can interact with the people that bring in unwanted pets, report to my supervisor, keep all animals clean and entertained. Considering that I would like to be an animal care specialist or a veterinarian, I think I could utilize certain skills and give back to the community by helping our little companions, but honestly I see that as too good to be true.
As far as the service learning site I am at now, I want to stay simply for the convenience. It's right by school, not to far from home, and very flexible hours with me; my life is crazy so it suits perfect for me just for that. So I will just stick with that.

  3. My ideal site would be an arts center, somewhere I can bring art to a disadvantaged community, preferably my own and the communities surrounding it. I would like to help kids of all ages gain exposure to art and hold community art shows so they can exhibit their work. I would teach classes and be forced to practice my Spanish. My organization skills would be put to the test because I would have to help keep track of our supplies as well as having to put up shows. I would also like to work with neighboring schools in order to get the interest of the kids. I want to be able to give back to my community and help them see art as an equal part of education.

I would definitely stay at my service site because it is convenient and I'm gaining skills that would help me become a teacher.

  4. My ideal site will be a Mental Health Center, in which I could serve people with a variety of mental illnesses. I would love to provide to this population some resources to get medical, food stamps, cash aid, educational/vocational training, rehabilitation, therapy, etcetera. I would love to test the knowledge I've gain from my psychology and human service classes such as the terminology, how to assess patients, and be tolerant and respectful to every single participant. I just know that the perfect place for me to do community service is a place where I can help people with mental illness and/or dual diagnosis.

I am seriously thinking about applying to a new service site. The site that I am at right now is open only Monday-Friday and that wont work for me next semester. I like it but that is the only inconvenience I'll have, and to avoid it, I prefer to change sites.

  5. My ideal site would be some where were I could help my community. Don't get me wrong I love being at the Fleet and helping people there. But the people who go there are not from the side of town where I live. I want to be somewhere were I could make a change in my community one way or another. Other than that the fleet has all I'm looking for in a site it provides a good environment and the supervisor is a really cool. I'm still deciding if I want to leave the Fleet or stay. The only reason I would leave would be if I could find site where I could impact my community more and would work with my schedule like the Fleet does.

  6. The ideal site in which I would like to volunteer at would be a wide variety of people being served as apposed to just a specific type of people. I would like to meet the need of help, whether it would be medical help or mental help, somewhere that would be good for the healthcare of the people coming in.

In terms of whether I would stay at my site next year is questionable because I like to work in the mid city clinic, but I like the environment of the library because of the quietness, and the access to the wide variety of books available to me at arms reach. Also just recommending good books to read to people and different things to get people more interested in reading is just fulfilling.

  7. My Ideal service learning site is a place that has flexible hours that I can work as much or as little in the week. Sometime I have a lot of time on my hands and then there is some weeks were there is not enough hours in the day. A place where I can interact with people and learn from their life experience. I would not mind if my Learning site could have to do something with the outdoors. Working closely with a community members and helping with things in the community.
I not shore if I want to leave my site or stay I love the fleet I have so much fun when I am there but am I learn a skills there. I would say No. I do not really think I have learn a lot of job skills being at the fleet. So I am going to keep my options open when it is time to pick a site. I really wanted to do the job Anwantte have it sounds like fun.

  8. My ideal service site world have to be a place that stays busy. I need to be moving around or else i get really bored and don't put my full effort into it. I also need a place that has flexible schedules where they can work with my schedule rather than me work with their schedule. I also love working with people so I world have to also be able to communicate and interact with many people and I really don't mind the age group.
I am planning on switching sites next year so that I can experience something new. I had many struggles and many good times but I feel like it's time to move on. It really has helped me and taught me many skills that I can use in my next site and at work but it just became difficult with completing hours and it made my schedule a lot less flexible.

  9. An ideal community service site for me would be a site where I can utilize my education, gain knowledge and experience all at the same time. Furthermore, the environment needs to be relaxed and positive; therefore the population served would be small. I like volunteering at Lincoln High School because my schedule is really flexible. However at this moment, I am thinking of changing sites to BLCI because I want to have a different experience. In addition, I want to be part of a community similar to where I grew up. I feel that I would relate a lot to the kids. Therefore at BLCI I would like to tutor students. Even though I can tutor at Lincoln High I want something different.

  10. My ideal service site would have to be getting to work with others to help out the community. somewhere where i can expand my knowledge and get to learn more about people skills, somewhere like a homeless shelter where you learn to communicate differently with each person. I would like the environment to be relaxing too not no much but not so crazy either.Somewhere where i can stay busy but can make it fun and exciting.

  11. My ideal service learning site would be Mid-City Clinic Pediatrics, a place where I learn and experience many things. I am always excited to volunteer there and to assist the lab technician with anything that she needs help with. She taught me how to do strep test, flu test, pregnancy test, urine test, etc. I also assist the lab technician with blood draws. At the laboratory, I also get to communicate with Mexican parents who don't speak English. I would ask the parents their child's date of birth in Spanish. Even though I don't speak Spanish, I am really proud that I can at least say something that the parents can understand. I want to become a nurse and this is the clinic where I can gain experience and knowledge about the things that I might use as a nurse. Therefore, as a nurse I would like to help many patients as I can and I also like to travel back to the camps to help refugees who cannot afford for their medication. As a nurse, I want to talk to my Karen community about how to stay healthy and I also want to talk to the youth who are interesting in working at the medical field.

I am planning to volunteer at the same site next year.

  12. My ideal service learning site would be just like the one I had at UCSD Run-Free Clinic. I really did enjoy my time there because I felt like I was making a difference. One of the main skills I used was my communication skills. This is a highly important part of the job because I worked as a interpreter. I enjoyed getting to meet and interact with people from different backgrounds. I also got familiar with a lot of the regulars there & got to know them on a more personal level. Overall, it was just a great place to be. The only thing I would change would have to be its hours. With that being said, due to schedule conflicts I am no longer able to voluteer there. But I do plan on returning this up coming fall of 2014. I really do miss it. As of right now I'm waiting for my paper work to get processed at San Diego High so I can volunteer there in the mean time.

  14. My ideal site would be a place in where I can give back to the community. I want to volunteer and feel like I have changed someone's life. I feel that if this was the case I would go home having the satisfaction of helping somebody. Helping the community will also give me experience on how to deal with people. I also would want to stay busy. I would like to volunteer In a site where I'm doing different things on a daily basis. Changing up tasks can make things more interesting for me and I will also be learning something new everyday.

I won't be changing sites because I like the things that I learn in the clinic. I think the skills that I learn can help me in the long run when I find my future job.

  15. my ideal site would be children's hospital because it would be more directed in my field of choice and it will give me all the experience i need plus i feel like it would be the best place to volunteer at and yes i will be staying at BLCI i love that place its like my little get away

  16. I would like to work in a place where there is a lot of movement and work but still have a sort of repetitive encounter with those I work with to create familiarity. I really don't mind any work as long as the people I work alongside with and those I service for make me happy. If I would change service sites next year, which does seem as a possibility, I may just ask the other price scholars which site seems the best for me. This is because I spend the bulk of my service in the library and the librarian is putting in a transfer and she honestly makes the site more fun even though most of it is just stacking books. I just feel no one could do her job as she does and still put in so much extra energy for others.

  17. My ideal site is somewhere I can work with students and still be able to get flexible hours. Somewhere they can understand me and take me serious not just think of me as a college student. I can honesty say working at Lincoln has be the best I learn so much from the staff and they respect me and the students can easily come and ask me for help. Every week I wait for fridays so I can go work at Lincoln. I don't think i am going to change my site

  18. my ideal site will be somewhere i can help families and kids who are struggling to reach their goals and continue with their education. I will like to help specifically AB540 students who are seniors in high school; provide them with many different resources and mentor them throughout their last year and fist semesters of college. as well as helping their parents with as much as financial support needed and possible, and teach them become leaders of their own kids. I will like to do more like presentations and represent the site.

as for my site, i honestly do enjoy it sometimes but i will be moving soon. due to the fact i am in different schools, different days...and sometimes its hard to balance and find time to do my homework.

  19. My ideal service site would be to have more students come to get help with their homework. I want to become a teacher so having the opportunity to be in charge of a class and giving the students directions and helping them with the work, would help me have experience in class situations. Also to have the opportunity to talk with the kids in their native language, because the population is mostly Hispanic.

As for my site, I love it I like going to BLCI everyday. I look forward to work with the kids. I won't move from my site because I love my kids and I already made a connection with them, and if l leave I know I won't be happy. Also my supervisor allows me to work on my homework while the students are doing theirs'. So they can see that we Scholars have homework too. I just love working there!

  20. My ideal service learning site would be someplace that would serve the needs of the LGBT community. I have volunteered with The Center, In The Mix, and The Youth Center(when it was on fourth and robinson), and have witnessed the lack of support in the community. Not that my career field is directly related to the LGBT community, but having grown up gay in a small community, it was hard to find a safe place in which I don't have to censor myself.

As for my current service site: while I do enjoy the flexibility the Science Center offers, I think I would like to change service sites next year. The work load is repetitive, and honestly, it's quite boring. Every now and again we get a new exhibit, or there is an event, but the excitement never really lasts long and it back to the same old routine.
I am a bit torn because although the Science Center can get pretty monotonous, they offer a very flexible schedule; and with the school and work load I have, it's a huge convenience.

  21. My ideal service site would be one in which I can use my math and sciences skills. I doesnt necessarily have to be in the industry but also in a school where I can tutor students in math, engineering, ir science and at the same time, learn more about them and also practice and review what i know.

  22. My ideal service site would be a place that would be a place that would influence students and also motivate the students that need help with motivation. The service site that i am at now it i like it a lot i like the feel of being in a school setting, i just wish that it was there to help and motivate the students more. I would like my service learning site to help all the students and family in the community. I would like it to join everybody as a whole. I would also have my ideal site help students prepare for the real world and just get them to the feel of reality. As they get closer to the day that they are about to graduate. I would also want to prepare students for the real world teaching them about real life.

  23. My ideal service site would be where you can learn about communication, interpreting, time management, and patience skills. I would help young people in the community who are trying to get in the business world. I am planing to state in my service site for next year if possible..

  24. My ideal service site would be a place that involves art and group projects and/or serving the poor and homeless. I like the site I'm serving now because they help motivate, encourage, and push students to get pursue their education and to go to college. I would like to use the skills I have now, like skills in doing group work and artwork, to help out more.
