Week #2 Reflection/Assignment reminder!

Reflection #2:
Given that we are in the midst of a huge drought that we are all facing please click on the link below and watch the video.  It is very revealing and shocking how much water we do use.  Do you think you can become more mindful of what you are using and could possibly be conserving?  Food for thought and some action.  What do you think?  What can you do to make a difference?

Reminder that your mock letter of recommendation is due at start of class next week. Bring laptops if you have them as you will be doing some career exploration work in class for your outline that is due week Feb 19th.

Happy thoughts for each of you!

  3. WOW! I didn't even have an idea of how much water we used a day. Those 700 gallons a week per person multiplied times the population in the United States is HUGE! we have to take action and care more about the water we consume since it's not a renewable source and population is growing very fast. If we continue to waste water like we do now it will become a problem for us in the near future. I think that we can make the difference by taking 5-10 minutes showers, not wasting water while brushing our teeth, and using only the necessary water for our other activities such as washing the car.

  4. 700 gallons is a lot of water. I have always think that we dont need to use good water for some things. For example, using good water for the toilet is absurd when you can use salty water from the sea, you can save a lot of good water on that. Even in the restrooms a lot of people use them and that is a lot of waste of water. Of course there are too many remedies to change this but not that many people know how many water they waste. I will spend less time in the shower to make at least a small difference.

  5. After watching the video, it made me realize how much water we really use daily. I personally don't think that I take advantage of water. I live in apartments in where I don't pay for water. I yell at my boyfriend when he lets the water run because I know that in other countries, water is a luxury. I will show this to my friends so they can be alert and cautious of how much water we use. I think showing this video to people will change their mindsets and maybe think twice before taking a 30 minute shower.

  6. well that make me want to save water i really did not know that's how much water we was wasting in one day but now that i know this i think imma drop the hour showers into maybe 25 min showers and try to stop letting the water run when i am washing dishes and brushing my teeth what really shocked me was how using the dish washer and washing clothes took that much water and then we think that these things that we have are helping us but they are really hurting us at the same time

  8. This is some crazy ass shit ! just blew my mind. Imagine if we would have to carry our own load every single day, I would be buff as hell! Do you even lift bro !? i dont think so !! i know i dont. But anyways. I think there's a lot we can do and the most important thing is to be self aware. We need to pay attention to what we are really doing. there's plenty of ways in which we can conserve water that have already been mentioned. shorter showers. shower with a buddy. Turning off the sink while we brush. maybe stop using the dishwasher and doing it by hand. Stop drinking as much water and a little more booze. Jk. Or maybe not. I'm willing to take one for the team. BYOB. I never realized how much water was being wasted and after seeing this is just an eye opener.

  9. I thought this video was super hilarious. I've always been worn about how much water I have to use because there's not much water that is filtered and blah blah blah. It's pretty crazy how only 10% i believe is used for drinking. So on the bright side i'm helping out by not drinking any water and getting kidney problems. GO ME!! right? Even though i already know all the information on this it doesn't make me understand that i should really pay attention to how much water i use. im being hardheaded. I guess after being warned for the 50th time ill be more careful :) i should take shorter showers rather then my 30 min one. i wont flush the toilet if i only pee (ill probably have my mom nagg at me to flush the toilet though). & ill advice my friends about this have them join my go green team :)

  10. It is scary!!! I am a mom and sometimes a fill out the bath tub (and add bubbles) for my son to play... I can't think of how much water I am wasting there. It is a lot of water that we waste when we wash our teeth or take a 30min shower so I really need to consider that when I take my general showers (a 45min shower). I feel really bad for those who does not have the privilege that I have when it comes to have clean and fresh water to drink, take a bath, and even wash dishes and clothes. I will be more aware of my consumption of water and change some habits.

  11. Although I could watch the video I can see the comments and see we use 700 gallons of water per week and thats a completely UNBELIEVABLE. I can say personally I had times when I was younger that I wasted water in the most peculiar of ways and now that when I got older I changed a bit but I still have a long way to go. The use of water for someone in this country is as natural as breathing air but I try to make it more and more apparent in my life that I need to change my ways and start using scheduled times to use water and to not always just waste it.

  12. I’ve known that we are in drought and that we are endangered of one day opening our faucets and nothing coming out. But since knowing this I have never really done anything to lower the amount of water I use. But seeing the actual number of gallons we use daily is crazy. One gallon for brushing our teeth that’s mind blowing. Benito’s idea of buddy shower I think is phenomenal. Also people need to start being lazy and start washing their dishes by hand. I think if we all would at least stop using a gallon less than we are using right now that can make big change I bet. Its all about doing small things that can create a big change.

  13. I think we all sometimes take water and other precious resources for granted. Yet we have to understand that we need water to stay alive; our body's need water to function. I think we can only survive a few days without drinking water. I hate wasting water and I do my best to not waste water. I think we can make a difference if we replace our toilets, dishwashers, sinks, washing machines, showers, and other water consuming appliances with appliances that use less water. Or maybe we can raise self-awareness about wasting water. I agree with some of you that we need to take faster showers.

  14. I think that the video is mind blowing and I really never thought we used that much water a day. Watching this video make me think more of the big picture of what could happened if we don't minimize the usage of water. We can make a difference by limiting the amount of water we used and also people should do laundry twice a month instead of every weekend.

  15. No way! Do we really spend that much water? I was surprised by the 700 gallons per week, that's a lot I mean we should start doing something about it. I personally do take care of the water I use. I use a glass of water to brush my teeth and I don't let the water run while I'm showering. It's all about being more conscious about how much water do we waste. People need to be informed about this huge problem that it is happening now and will cause negative effects for our planet in the future.

  16. I am a bit worried because I feel that someday we will run out of our fresh water. Personally, I am a water drinker. I’d like to think of myself as someone whom is very water conservant other than guzzling down about 3 bottles a day. One thing I really think was a bit wacky was the 1 gallon of water for brushing teeth; apparently it is the thing to let the water run while brushing. Honestly that is first grade stuff, like how Barney used to sing “Neeeever let the water run. HEY! Neeever let the water run”! Besides my reaction to the video, I believe that there is a lot that we can do to preserve water. Take shorter showers and turn off the water while you scrub your body or wash your hair, turn off the faucet when you are brushing your teeth, wash dishes by hand, do laundry after 6pm and before 11am, water your grass by hand and watch the weather to make sure it is not going to rain, wash your car with a hose and not buckets upon buckets of water, etc. I saw a sign on the freeway saying that there is a serious drought and to conserve water, I honestly didn’t think twice about the assignment topic until I saw the video. Besides all of the things that I just mentioned, the biggest difference that you can make, is to lead by example and spread the word.

  17. WOW !!! That crazy how much water is being use and we don't even notice . I think people all over the united states should watch this video so they can see what happing to are water and what we are using it for.

  18. After watching this video, I clearly understand how much water we are using per day. I can't believe that we are wasting so much water just for a day. I personally spend more than 30 minutes in the shower and I love to drink a lot of water. However, I don't really use much water when brushing my teeth or washing my face, and I am working on taking a fast 10-20 minute shower. I can make a small difference by using water only if I really need it and telling my family to use less water. I can't just imagine our lives in the future, if we don't stop wasting water.

  19. I was really shocked when I saw that we used 700 gallons of water a week per person!!! That is just mind blowing!! I never really took the whole "save water" advice seriously growing up but now I just feel like a total idiot. I contribute to the problem when I take my hour long showers & not shutting the water off while I'm brushing my teeth. Note to self: WATER IS A LUXURY! There are so many people in this world who don't have any water resources & I'm over here taking it for granted. I will work hard to remind myself of water conservation.

  20. 700 gallons is insane. I never understood why people would leave the water running while they brushed their teeth. I remember when I was much much younger, I think I was like 6 or 7 and I saw a commercial on KPBS where a little kid was brushing his teeth and next to the sink was a fish tank. Every time the little kid would leave the water running, the water in the fish bowl would get lower and lower until the fish had so little space to swim, it looked like it was part of Blackfish (HA! Morbid humor, sorry.) The bratty kid acknowledges his wasteful ways and learns to turn off the water if he isn't using it.
So having visuals like that really stick to me.
I definitely know that with the amount of water I drink, I would have buff arms if I had to carry those gallons. I do have to stop letting the water run while I do the dishes and fill up the sink like a normal person. I just don't like feeling the floating food in the water (UGH first world problems). I've been getting better with shower times.
    Here's a suggestion, co-showers!!

  21. Well I already have been trying to waste less water by showering in less time because I noticed I work slow at a lot of things. But when I heard of a drought again I started to think how else I can conserve water. All I got is to make sure I finish each glass of water I serve because sometimes when I get water from the fridge I get a little quezy from the first cup and is unable to finish all of the second cup. Another thing I can do is shut down my brother's shower when he walks out of his room because he'll turn the shower on and leave it running for ten minutes before he gets in.

  22. honestly i didn't think i used so much water but after watching the video i totally change my mind. they put it in such a good visual way of seeing things because if we just think about the water we use, we don't think of much especially cause you wont remember every single drop. carrying the amount you use would make you realize all the water you use not only because your seeing it but carrying it as well. i believe i can make a difference by reusing water if i can or turning it off when im not using it even if its just a few seconds. a few seconds can make a huge difference because they eventually add up.

  23. I do not believe I use a lot of water I try to save as much as I can, I turn off the water when I am brushing my teeth, I wash my clothes on the low water setting so it doesn't use that much water. I think what I can improve on is when I wash the dishes I could fill the sink up and then wash the dishes in there rather then letting the water run, that is very wasteful now that I am thinking about it. I will do that the next time I wash the dishes, and I almost never wash my car, just my windows so I can see.

  24. I know this is a serious matter but the music lol. anyway yes i believe that we should use less water, there are such things called "2 minute showers" maybe not for girls unless they are just rinsing, if military and the jailed can do it, so can you. You can always keep some water in a bucket in the sink like most older people i know. the toilet seems pretty ridiculous though, 3 gallons per flush? crazy. as for drinking water, idk where to start with that i like drinking water.

  25. I agree that water is a luxury. I used to stop the water in the shower in between shampooing and such, but I got back to being comfortable with having the water on the whole time. And usually I do take 30 minute showers. Videos like this are necessary for us, and people in general, to watch and be concerned about. Since MECHA in high school, I've been aware that we're coming to a drought around 2040. And in places like Las Vegas, they suck up water like it's nothing.

  26. This video was such a eye opening for ME! its hard to believe we don't really pay much attention of how much water we waste; what if we replace water with food? would we be waiting this much FOOD in this case. I personally take 30-40 min showers and this is all about to change because i dont want to be getting out feeling like i am carrying 35x gallons of water; while it can be useful for something else. The only way we can make a difference is by first informing people of the bad effects water wasting is doing, and then FORCING them to make a difference.
