  1. The specific skills I have used at my community service learning site are that, in pursuing a career in nursing Iam bettering my people skills by making contact with the most hormonal people in the universe. Teenagers. Seeing as I still am one, being 17 I have learned how to increase my tolerance level for them and how I can deal with them and people in general. The other skills Iwill need to be successful in my career field would be, the ability to talk to people who are not correspnding to what I am saying whether it be a language barrier or difficulting coping with a situation. My career options haven't expanded much because I am at the library I have been doing some reading here and I only want ot pursue my career that much more.

  2. ^^^^ abdulahi, i was supposed to be 1st , i was writing mine and refreshed the page and boom there u are , grrrr .

    anyways here is my reflection

A skill that I found myself using at my site is using my voice.
From speaking to large bodies of students or just giving my opinion at club meetings and really expanding my tone into a more confident and assertive speech.

A skill that I can develop to excel in my career choice is clueless to me as of right now.

As far as my career and my site, my site has not help me expand my career options when it comes to engineering. I am really feeling incompatible with my major but I am enjoying my site because of my connection with the community which has had me pondering if i should change majors.

  3. What specific skills have you used at your community site?

Since my site is Rosa Parks Elementary, the skills that I use frequently is my teaching skills and patience. The class that I have show to be eager to learn with any subject despite it's difficulty which is easier for me to teach them the material given to me to teach. However I have to imply my patience in order for me to understand that the students need the time to make the lesson sink in.

What other skills will be important for you to develop to excel in your career field?

A skill that I would need to develop for me to excel in my career field would be TIME MANAGEMENT, COMMUNICATION (Professional), & overall planning because with having Film as my future career, the lifestyle I would need to work toward would need these 3 key components. Which I'd need to constantly work on.

Have your career options been expanded by your service experience? Why or why not?

They have in a way that I know that being an independent film maker would be something that I'd need to consider a secondary job because of it being contract based if I were hired and not working on a constant project WITH pay. SO with that in mind.. I considered that I wanted to gain a grade A education in sociology and maybe become a professor or teacher in high school or middle school.

  4. The skills that I've used in my community site are my spanish skills, english skills, translating skills, computer skills, organizing skills, and finally communication skills. The other skill that will be important for me to develop for my career field are dealing with people in person. My career option has been expanded by my service experience because not have I only practiced in improving the skills that I have mentioned but I've also gained job experience. Job experience is important to me because I've never had a job and I think working at the clinic will give me the experience that I need. Not only will I get job experience, I will also have a great chance of getting hired!

  5. The skills that I've used at my site are communication, translation, and patience. I volunteer at Rosa Parks Elementary School and I am in contact with children and their parents. The population at this school is mostly Hispanic, and many of the kids and their parents need help with the English language so I use my communication and translation skills to help them communicate with the professors or vice verse. Patience is another important skill that I've used at my site. Since I know most of the material that they see in class, I have to understand that the children need their time to analyze and process all the information provided to them and not try to hurry them to finish. Also, there are a few kids at the classroom where I volunteer that sometimes make me want to go nuts but I have to control myself and be patient.
The skills that I would like to develop are not take everything personally and not let other people's actions affect me.
This site has really helped me to expand my career vision. I did not know that in the Child Welfare agency there are many job titles and that the type of education require for each of them differ a little bit. I am in constant contact with the social workers at Rosa Parks and they talk to me about the programs each of them got into in order to be where they are now and what programs they don't recommend me to get into. So far, so good!! There are lots of stuff that I like about my site and not so many that I dislike, that's why I still believe this is a good site for me.

  6. During the time I have spent at my site, I have gained to skills of patience, communication, and having a positive attitude. These skills have helped me talk to the families and interact with children that are both interested and not interested in the exhibits at the fleet. I believe that I need to gain the skill of being around more professional people or mathematical skills for my field. I am still unsure of what career I want to pursue in, I still take an interest in science even though the fleet may be boring. I have an interest in the science field which is why i chose the fleet to be my volunteer site, but if based my interest for that field on the site then i probably would not be interested in it anymore because it gets boring. For me being bored is really bad because I am not the one to stay focused on something that is not interesting or fascinating; my mind will drift off or I will dread whatever I am bored of.

  7. I've only use my communication skill with the patients and the lab technician (Thuy) because I only assist her with what she's doing. I've volunteered there for only 4 or 5 times and I didn't really get to do a lot of things. My supervisor said that there are Karen people who come to their clinic sometimes, and they have no one who speaks Karen. I was really happy because I thought I will be able to help them by translating, but I haven't see any Karen people since I volunteered there. I didn't really get to use my Karen speaking skill, but I gained a lot of experiences or skills from Thuy, one of the lab technicians. When I started volunteer at the clinic, I learned how to make copies and I also get to see what Thuy is doing at the lab. When I am with Thuy, I get to hold the kids' arms when she draws their blood, I get to report how many patients came in the morning and afternoon, and I also get to see different tests that she's doing in the lab. Some of the skills that are important for me to develop to excel in my career field are good communication and observation, ability to answer questions and offer advice, and excellent people skills. As I said, I have not learn much because I expected to witness the things that the doctors and the nurses are doing to help patients and I haven't see any of that.

  8. The skills I used in my community service site communication skills, translation, and customer service skills. Important skills I want to develop to excel in my carrer will be communication skills and how to approach people. I do have good communication skills but I want to be better. As a nurse I have to know how to approach people and how to talk to them and for this I have to have good communication skills. My community service site has not really helped me that much towards my career. I did learn how to deal with customers and children but I do know this will not help me that much when get into the medical field. I am planning in volunteering in a hospital later on.

  9. The skills I have used at my community site are mainly skills related to computers. What I do at my site requires me to be able to operate a computer and have certain knowledge of Microsoft Office (mainly word, and excel). I have also used communications skills since they are very important to understand different task I've been assigned as well as to report to my supervisors.
I think one important skill I need to develop or improve is my public speaking skill since it going to play a very important role in my development as an engineer but more importantly in my development as a leader.
I think that my career options have been expanded because at my service site I have met different people and that is and advantage. networking is an important part in a career. sometimes is not what you know but the people you know what makes you be successful.

  10. Skills that I have used at my service site definitely have to be listening, following directions and patience. I have to listen carefully to what my supervisors are telling me because I can't keep asking them every five minutes. They're teachers so they have a bunch of things to do. Since each teacher has their own way of being organized and follow different procedures, I have to make sure I complete whatever task I am assigned correctly. So listening skills definitely come into play as well as how well I can follow directions. Patience is key when working in a school environment because kids like to be kids and not listen. LOL. I walk around each classroom and try to help some of the kids with whatever project they are currently working on. I would get a bit frustrated whenever I tried to approach them with help and they would blow me off. But I always try to remember how I would feel if I was in their shoes (I probably wouldn't ask for help either.)

One skill that would be important for my career would definitely be the ability to stay organized. Ms. Groves is extremely organized. She has all her cabinets labeled and sorted as well as her students' supplies numbered. She says it helps her keep track of her supplies and it prevents them from getting stolen.

I don't think my service site has expanded my career options. I have been thinking about incorporating photography as a part of my career, but that's been out of pure interest. Still, I think photography would be more of a hobby. Nutrition has always interested me as well, especially now that I've become more aware of what I eat. But SDHS hasn't really expanded my career options.

  11. The specific skills that I have shown at the Fleet, is my ability to communicate and get people involved in the active that are displayed on the floor. Many times the parents would come in and watch there children play and I would usually try to get the parent involved in the activity when I am in the Tinkering Studio the activates there are all imagination bass activates.
To say more organize and not to fall behind when I stated to fell over whelm with things that are happing in my life. Since I am one day hoping to own my own practice I need to learn how to work through the stress full times in my life. Not allowing it over whelm me make me feel like I need to retreat.
I do not think my career options have been expanded from the site but for the people that come to the site it have gave me more ideas in what I might want to study when I transferor.

  12. The specific skills that I have shown with the Cesar Chavez Club are communication skills, leadership, and punctuality. These skills will help me excel in any career field. But the skills that I believe I still need to work in are to stay organized. There has been times when I'm in charge of an activity and do not have all of the proper materials. This is holding me back from being the best that I can be at this site. But have my career options expanded?? Maybe. I'm not 100% sure. It showed me how much I really like working with kids and how efficient I am in getting a point across with them. The thing I'm not sure of is if I can see myself doing this 5 days a week for a good part of my life.

  13. I actually chose my service site because I knew I wanted to work in Special Education, I just wasn't sure from what perspective when I started. Being there for a few months I have trimmed down the options to occupational therapist, also Speech Pathology. I love the fact that the SP and the OT talk to me about the job and the good and bad sides of it, I am taking as much time as I can to understand and see if that path for sure is the career path I would like to follow. I think it was a great choice to choose that service site.

  14. My community site is Rosa Parks.
Following order is one skill that I have used because I do everything that people tell me to do without showing any bad expression.
Other skills to improve would be to manage my time on Thursday nights because I get to my service site all sleepy x)
Yes, my career options have expanded to be an oral speaker for any business (whatever is this career named) because I don’t really feel shy when I speak. I also know what I would not like to be but that is other issue. :p

Have your career options been expanded by your service experience? Why or why not?

  16. The skill I feel I mostly use is persistance. I have to keep making myself do the same thing the teacher had asked me so then I can help the class get along to the exercises they need to accomplish. I know that even though it does not feel important to do the repetitative things, it is necessary yo help the teacher teach the class.
Persistance is going to be an important skill as an architect because there will always be people trying to change your designs, even the customers, and you got to be persistant enough to see a project through to the end even though it will no longer be what you drew down the first time.
I have been thinking of the job of a consultant lately after I get the B.A in architecture. From what I think of it as I would just be adding to someone's already made ideas, I wouldn't have to stress myself on actually making the building appear as much.

  17. Working at the Science Center you have to have excellent communication skills in the sense that you have to convey the same information to adults and children, but in different ways so that the children can understand the concepts behind the exhibits. Skills needed in my career field include: hard work, team work, time management, and an open mind; all of which I excel at. My service site has not influenced any change in my career goals, I still plan on becoming an actor, and then an educator.
