Refelction Week #10

We all have both internal and external motivators. Please identify 5 internal and 5 external motivators that are impacting your career choice. Discuss which is most important and why.  Feel free to look up more information online to enhance your reflection.

Extrinsic motivation occurs when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity in order to earn a reward or avoid a punishment.

Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in a behavior because it is personally rewarding; essentially, performing an activity for its own sake rather than the desire for some external reward.

  1. 5 extrinsic motivations are: Money, Lavish luxuries, Not having to worry about things, peer pressure, worries
5 intrinsic motivations: Feeling of accomplishment, personal satisfaction, integrity, because it feels right, looking to the future and looking at the past

The intrinsic motivation that is most important to me is the looking to the and looking to the past because it shows me what I did wrong and the time that i have to fix the mistakes that I made in the past.
The extrinsic motivation that is most important to me is not having to worry about things because I feel like in the future I don't want to having to worry about things as much, things like financial security because I want to know that I can provide for myself and the family that I hope to have one day. That one thought is what motivates me outside of anything else because I don't want to become a slave of the dollar. I want to be able to have the necessities as well as the luxuries that life has to offer.

  2. External motivators:

    1. Evelyn - My daughter is the biggest motivation ever. I need to succeed in order to give her a comfortable life. She keeps me going, even when all I want to do is give up.

    2. My mom - I feel if I give up, all the hard work my mom put into raising my sister and I, by herself, would be wasted.

    3. Money - I don't aspire to be rich but the reality is that we need that green paper in order to live. I don't want to struggle and live paycheck to paycheck or have to worry about whether or not I'll have my bills paid or enough food to eat. I want to live comfortably. And I want to travel, which costs money.

    4. I get to help people - I want to become an art teacher and as well as travel the world and take pictures of people I meet along the way. I want to teach low income kids who don't have the same opportunities as the middle class and face obstacles. I want to teach them to embrace art as a therapy session and never give up that creativity. I want to be a cool teacher and I want kids to look forward to my class.

    5. The occasional praise - Everyone likes to be appreciated and I want to hear parents tell me that they appreciate what I do for their kids.

    Internal motivators:

    1. Passion - I love art! I love to draw and I always have since I can remember. I've also recently discovered my love of film photography. Just the process of developing your own film and your own prints, as well as all the patience and care required, is so rewarding in the end.

    2. Satisfaction - The process of going from having a simple idea in your head to seeing it complete on paper, canvas, photo-paper or even a wall is one of the most challenging yet satisfying experiences anyone can go through. Art requires lots of time and dedication, and yes you will fail, but once you complete that artwork or help guide someone complete their work, it's all worth it.

    3. Selflessness - One of my high school teachers told me that I shouldn't be an artist because I wouldn't make money. It's not about money. I want to teach art because I want to feel as though I'm giving back to the community. I want to make a positive impact on kids who feel as though they have nowhere to turn to but the streets.

    4. Interest - If I'm going to spend a great amount of time on a career, it better be one I'm interested in. Even if I don't plan on using something I learned towards my career, I'm learning it because I'm interested in it. I wouldn't want to waste any moment of my life on something that isn't interesting.

    5. Happiness - I do (or at least try to) what makes me happy. Life's too short to be anything but happy, so if it doesn't put a smile on that gorgeous face then don't put up with it.

  3. External Motivators:

Happiness: Sure money is great and all that, but what I really want is to live comfortably and happily.

Sanity: In the chaotic world we live in, I feel remaining sane, to some degree, is very important because there has to be some order to our chaos.

Family: I want to act as a positive role model for my younger cousins and my nephew; I want to show them they are not limited to what the eye sees, but that the sky is the limit.

Money: Granted I said earlier that money is not all that important to me, but I would like to live my life comfortably. I don't want a lavish home, exotic cars etc, I just want to rest easy knowing that my bills are paid, and that I have an emergency fund.

Living the dream: I am a true artist at heart, and weather I am working on a show or not, I am always honing my skills, and working very hard to enjoy the life of an actor.

    Internal Motivators:

Passion: As I just mentioned, I am an artist, and feel completely at home when I am performing.

Education/Experience: You don't need much education to become an actor, but the more experience you have the better your chances are of getting more gigs.

Satisfaction: There is no greater feeling for me than the feeling of a job well done. I take pride in all that I do, and feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment when I complete a task.

Letting go of the past: If I want a bright future I cannot let the darkness of my past penetrate what fate has in store for me.

Taking it one day at a time: My dad gets frustrated with me and calls me careless and carefree because this is the way I live my life, but unlike him I do not stress over wondering what the future holds for me because my plans don't always align with what the universe has in store for me.

  4. Five internal motivators: Imagination, Creativity, Passion, Inspiration, and Therapy. -- I'm grateful for pursuing art, fantasy, and fiction since I was a kid, because now I can express myself aesthetically much more easily and bring to life pieces and works that trigger the viewer/reader emotionally, relate to them through art and literature, and bring them joy, hope, inspiration, and a drive to keep going.

Five external motivators: Bringing community together (through art, beauty, and story-telling); Financial - to help sustain family, friends, people in need, and extra money to donate; Satisfaction of Completion - accomplishment, woo!; Admiring creations - just because artists do enjoy admiring their work; Not choosing failure - it's not a good feeling for anyone to fall behind.

  5. Internal Motivators
    1. Carefree of worries: Most important because being free of worries means not stress, more time to sleep, being free from anything that would require something that I would not like to force myself to do. It motivates me think that at one point of my life, or at least for a moment, I would not have to be worried in my subconscious about anything.
    2. Challenge: Second most important because I like to see how far I am able to go when I set myself a goal and I like what I am able to gain and what I am able to accomplish, even I like the feeling when I accomplish that goal if I accomplished.
    3. Competition: Third most important because I like to compete with myself, not with other people. I like to raise my standards and see what I am capable of doing when it comes to education, work, consistency, etc. I am so used to this that I do it without noticing it and I feel great when I realize y did it.
    4. Satisfaction: Fourth most important because as I explained above, I love how I smile internally out of nowhere when get to my goals, when for a moment I don’t have anything to worry about and when I realize that I challenged myself without noticing it. I would do things twice if I would get the same satisfaction that I feel for the first time.
    5. Pleasure: Fifth most important because if it wasn’t for anything that I explained above I would not have the idea that I am doing everything okay and that I did it for me, not for anyone else. Pleasure is for the reason that it feels great that do something that makes you feel amazed and happy for a moment and when I think about it I am still FEELING GOOD!
    External Motivators
    1. Proficiency: Most important because thinking that one day I would get a master’s degree makes me feel that I would have something before my name such as, Mr. Calderon or Doc. Calderon. That would make me feel important.
    2. Quality of Life: Second most important because I would be stable, if everything goes alright, economically and I would have a decent and well pay job.
    3. Future: Third most important because I always wonder about my future therefore, I think about that I would have my dream job that is not going to make me say every morning, “Ugh.. Great! Again going to work”
    4. Family: Fourth most important because they have more options to be well stable economically but if I have a decent job, I would be able to help them economically and I would also give my brothers and sister’s sons and daughter a good image. Even to mine if I have xD
    5. Wants: I am not planning to get married soon or being in a relationship for a moment after I finish with my education so that I can buy things that I have always wanted to buy, even travel if possible.

Successful: I plan to be successful. Being successful is my goal, I will be able to make my goals and dreams come true.
Having an important tittle: I would like to be respected by others and have an important tittle under my name.

    Internal Motivators:
Having a stable life: Having a stable life would be my goal. I think this is the most important because I never want live pay check to pay check again. I never want to worry about having enough money to pay the bills.
Educated: I plan to get more educated than I already am. I want to learn about the world and my community.
Personal satisfaction: It would satisfy me to know that I have changed somebodies life for the better.
Responsible: I want to be more responsible than I already am. Being financially stable will help me be more responsible.
Experience:I think the experience that i will get from Social Work will be amazing! I will actually get to experience helping out others. I had a Social Worker one time years ago and he sucked at his job. I plan to be the opposite.

For the extrinsic motivator, I believe that the most important motivator is accomplishments. With this type of motivation, a chain reaction will create leading to the other extrinsic motivators I have listed. Once I have completed many accomplishments, I will gain titles, which lead to success, and that means the checks come rolling in, and I get all the luxuries I want.
Lastly, for the intrinsic motivator, the most important motivator has to be passion. I believe this to be a significant intrinsic motivator not only for me, but any person that goes into a career and expects to stick with it for the rest of their lives. If you do not catch yourself loosing track of time, not in it for the money, and enjoy that inner satisfaction, then you are where you need to be; that's how I see it in my eyes.

  11. Internal Motivators:
    1. Passion: This is a big thing for me. I want to be in a career that I have a deep desire to do. I want it to come as natural as breathing for me not just some job that I'm not going to enjoy. This is one of my driving forces.

    2. Happiness: This goes hand in hand with passion. I know that a office job/sitting behind a cubicle would make me very unhappy. It's not the type of person I am. I want to help others. I know I'll be one happy camper every morning when I get ready for "work."

    3. Pleasure: I guess this can be seen as me being a little selfish. I want to be a trauma nurse because I know how emotionally rewarding it can be knowing that you helped save someone's life.

    4. My decision: Ultimately, my career choice will be something I have control over. No chose this for me, I did. I'm taking control of my own life.

    5. Morals/Values: I honestly believe that one shouldn't go through life putting themselves first (some circumstances are excluded of course). You have to learn to be selfless and be willing to help others without it bothering you.

    External Motivators:
    1. Family: Definitely the top motivator for me. I put such a high priority on education for my parents. They've done so much for me, I've seen them struggle to put a roof over my head. We've never had a luxurious life style but a humble one which I'm not embarrassed of at all. My dad has worked in landscaping since he came to this country over 20 years ago. i see the scars on his swollen hands. They are a constant reminder as to why I want my career so badly! I will be the one to brake the chains off the ankles in my family.

    2. Money: I want to be financially stable and not struggle to get by. I know that life is hard and never easy but having a stable income makes life a lot easier. Plus, I want to be able to give back to my parents.

    3. Education/Title: I'm motivated by the title. I'm shooting for my Masters in Nursing and who knows, maybe after 20 years of experience get my Doctorate/PhD and teach as a professor at a university for nursing students.

    4. Role Model: I want to show minorities, especially latinos, that you don't have to be another statistic. Just because you grew up in the ghetto doesn't mean you have to stay there.

    5. Helping others: I want to be able to say "I saved someone's life today."

3.Family (Husband and Edwin): My son has always been my biggest motivation every step I had take and everything I do is for him. My husband has been their since day one and supports me a lot im really grateful to have him in my life!
    4. Family: I have my up's and down's with my mom but I love her so much she had show me a lot and I want her to be proud of me. I want to be an example for my youngest sisters I always tell them "If I can do it you can do it too"
5.Successful: I want to achieve a lot of things in life I want to be an example for my son and someone he can look up to and be proud of.

    ReplyDelete
  15. External Motivators:
    1. Parents - My parents have been supported me through education since I lived in a Thai refugee camp. Even though it was really expensive for my schooling, they tried so hard to put me in school. Now that I have a great opportunity to learn here in America, I will study hard and try my best to become what I want to become and help my parents later on. They really want me to become a nurse, and that's that career I want.
    2. My two best friends - My two best friends are always there for me when I need them. They always encourage me not to give up and they always tell me that "nothing is impossible and everything is possible." They are really great friends and they are like part of my family.
    3. IRC Staff: They are very important to me because they all help me in different ways. They always help me with homework, since high school and until now. They always encourage me to study hard because they know that I didn't have this great opportunity back then. They helped me with almost everything that I need help with in high school and also in college. Most of all, they really believe that I can succeed in the future.
    4. My high school teacher that I still contact with - She is so kind to me and others. She helped me a lot in high school and I learned a lot from her. She is the only person in high school that I can rely on when I have problems with my classes, school work, etc. She helped me so much and I want to make her happy by getting my college degree and becoming a nurse.
    5. To be a role model for other Karen students (just like what Elizabeth said) - Most of the Karen students, especially boys, here in San Diego didn't graduate from high school because they believe that "they can't do it." Some of them gave up and didn't try at all. When they don't go to school, they do drugs and become involve in gangs. That really bothers me. In high school, I tried my best to help them, and some of them try very hard, but some of them didn't even try. Now that I am in college, I want to tell them that there's no such thing as "can't do" in this world. I am trying my best to help them now by creating a study group, so that it will encourage them to work harder and try to pass the CAHSEE.

    Internal Motivators:
    1. Making differences in people's lives - When I become a nurse, I want to help sick people here in San Diego. I also want to travel to different places, especially, refugee camps in Thailand, to help sick people who cannot afford for their medications.
    2. Happiness - Getting a job I want and living with my family (if I'm still single :)) or having my own family.
    3. Accomplishments - I want to be able to accomplish my goals and dreams.
    4. Becoming a successful person - Also being a good role model for my two little brothers.
    5. Enjoying my life and enjoying nature :)

The most important external motivators are my parents because without them, I wouldn't be here!! I would have to stay at the camp for my entire life and not being well educated. Success is my internal motivator because if I succeed in my life, I will get the job I love, I will be able to travel to different places to help people who are in need, and most of all making my parents, best friends, IRC staff, and my high school teacher proud.

  16. my 5 external motivators would be:

1-money: this is one of my motivators because all of us need financial stability. I want a better future for myself and the family I want to have. I also want to to have luxuries and help my family if someday they need my help.

2-title: having a degree is also a motivator for me because of the prestige it provides to the person that owns it. I want to be seen as a successful person when people talk about me. It is also a challenge that I have decided to take and I want to prove myself I can achieve this goal.

3-role model: I also want to be a role model for my family, I want my sister to follow the path I am following and help her be successful in the future. I want her to look at me as her successful brother and an example to follow.

4-family: my parents have done very much to help me being here today and studying the career I chose and in the place I wanted. For this reason I have a commitment not only with myself but with them too that I will succeed as a student and as a person.

5- challenge: the career I chose as my major is one of the most demanding ones. Engineering requires tons of time and sacrifices and its a challenge for anyone. this is one of the reasons for which i decided to study engineering, I want to prove myself i can do it.

    5 internal motivators.

1- passion: since I was a kid i was involved with technology. I remember my first video game and how excited i was when i first played it. after a couple of years i started to like technology more and being more curious about how things worked. I really enjoy learning anything related to my career.

2-enjoy my job: definitely one of my motivators is to be happy with my future job. i know that if I worked in a place where i get to do the things i like the most, it would be the best job, i imagine this as getting paid for doing the things i like to do.

3-education: the simple fact of just learn is also another motivator. one of my strengths is Learner and that is because i just like to learn new things everyday, regardless if I am going to use them or not, it's just love for the knowledge.

4-improve: for me having a degree is sign of improvement. and being a better person than i was before is very important for me. I am always looking to improve in different areas of my life and in the professional area is definitely one of them.

5-happiness: just knowing that i will have my degree makes me happy. it may be because getting a degree is like completing something that is hard to get, or because my life is going to be better with a degree, either way it just makes me happy to be pursuing a degree in engineering.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Internal motivation:

    1. To get out of where I am. I don't care whether I move up or down the social ladder, I just need to get away from my own family who think they're acting cute when they are trying to use people.

    2. Pay my mom's bills.

    3. Travel. I want a career that will take me places.

    4. Do something constructive with my life because I don't see any way that is practical living.

    5. Find balance. No occupation will make me happy, but there are those that can make me miserable. If I find the one that takes the least out of me then I will be able to work on may self more.

    External Motivation:

    1. My mom would actually be able to say she is proud of at least one of her sons.

    2. To self-indulge. I see a lot of things I like or want to get into but don't because of time and money.

    3. To stop letting people write me off as second rate. I don't like to blow myself up as important, but if I have a title that speaks well enough for itself, it says I'm doing something productive with myself.

    4. I know this is wrong, but with a career I can blow people that I don't want to deal with off without dealing with their emotions.

    5. Lately I have been thinking such negative thoughts of people in general that I believe it's getting a bit unhealthy, with a career I may be able to adjust back into interacting well with others again.

Truth be told I don't look for motivation. I feel like it just blinds me from what needs to be done. I come home and try to do my work and I see no way that I am getting closer to where I need to be. I even feel further from it. And with maotivation the crap just piles on a lot more with no way out.

    internal motivation
    -self satisfactions
-control of my life and future
    --happiness
-my self of mind to know i can be anything i want to be
-to make a difference in people's lives

I look at people that i dont want to ever be in my life and then i just tell myself that man i gotta keep going when it comes down to school or anything. i try to keep on going and push my way through. i also do it for the self satisfaction so i can know that i can take on anything. In addition i mainly do it for my parents because without my parents there telling me constantly that i cant be what i want to be, it makes me want to prove them wrong. I want to be the successful one out of me and my brothers and sisters. another motivator is so i can afford the life style i want to live and not have to ever depend on anyone. I want to be independent.

  21. External: money, the American dream, title, happiness, and be role model.
The most important one to be would be to be able to live the American Dream. I know that the "american dream" is a false hope, but somehow, I still want it. I want the money, wife and kids, and the home.I want to be able to support my family and be able to say that with all of my hard work, I am successful.
Intrinsic: make a difference in other's lives, passion, self-motivation, educated, and live life.
The most important to me would be to help and make a difference in other's lives. I see no point in being successful and not helping those around you out even come back to your hometown or neighborhood and making a change. Just doing that will motivate others to do the same.

  22. My top 5 internal motivator for my career choice are
    1. Because i want to be someone students they can count on.
    2. Also to make a difference in my culture
    3. Because of self satisfaction
    4. Because that's that i want to do.
    5. I love working with people.

    External motivations for my career.
    1. Not money
    2. My friends
    3. People in my community.

The career i chose is to become a History teacher. I chose this career because when i was in middle school i was a troubled kid, and no one really believed i was going to do something in my life, on till i met this wonderful 7th grade history teacher. She was my main motivator to stop doing bad, she always compared e to Alexander The Great. I didn't know who he was on till she gave me a book and I read it. Since then I love history it gives me and idea of who we are and were we come from. History fascinates me because i can relate in some ways to it; also because like my teacher she inspired me to do something good. And the bonus for loving history i love working with students. That's why i want to become a history teacher.
