Thank you all for the great class today! I hope you are all willing to look at how you are managing your time and make some conscious choices about how to improve your day to day time.
For this weeks reflection, please discuss your service learning site...explain who you are serving, what your responsibilities are and most importantly, what do you expect to gain in terms of skill and personal/professional growth at your site this year?
The site that I'm doing my service learning hours is at San Diego High School and I am working with the librarian who is a great advisor because she is really cool. My responsibilities are to serve as the librarians assistant and to help out withthings that she asks me to elp around the library with like checking in and out (books), returning the books, and handling the students in the library. The skills I hope to gain frmo this site is to be able to learn how to be able to deal with students that are a little troublesome and how to keep my composure in order to maintain a professional manner. Personal I hope to increase my tolerance level of dealing with people who are be just too much to handle.
ReplyDeleteHang around me more... You will be able to handle folks that are too much. ABDULLAHIIIII!
DeleteMaybe but I don't know because I'm slowly building it so I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, I know that you just can't let them get under your skin.
DeleteMy site is the Reuben H. Fleet Center, there at the Fleet I engage with the guests and enhance their curiosity by practicing inquiry based questions; which are questions that lead the guests to the answer of the questions they ask. I help out the MOD (Manager On Duty) by roaming to center and making sure everyone is safe and having the best time that they can have. Sometimes I am scheduled to stay in one area called Kids City. In my opinion, that is the most occupied space that has to be monitored at all times because those children have some great imaginations and do the most unexpected things. At the Fleet I expect to gain skills in terms of speaking to others that I do not know, listening to others speak, becoming a better problem solver, and being more science oriented because I happen to enjoy science. All of these skills will expand my career opportunities, as well as make me a dangerous person in the professional world!
ReplyDeleteI am currently serving the Cesar Chavez Clubs; my duty as a club coordinator is to teach elementary/middle/high school students the values of the club, as well as the history of the Farm Workers Union and many other historical moments. Currently we are in the "training" process; new and past years club coordinators gather together every Friday at Wilson middle school. We have been learning to creat agendas, the values of the clubs, history, etc... Mainly all the necessary skills to be a great club coordinator, as well as having a successful year. Hopefully by the middle of this month we will be ready to start working with the kids. I hope this experience helps me grow more as a leader.I know for sure it will help me be more organize, since I will be creating agendas for each meeting and to manage teaching the kids something valuable in an hr or so.
ReplyDeleteI am really exited and looking forward to this experience!
Well Said.
DeleteI am doing my hours at Rosa Parks Elementary School as the Librarian and Social Worker Assistant. Thankfully I was able to do some hours during the summer and I got to meet and work with Soraya (the SW) and Irma (the volunteer's coordinator). During the summer, I helped out clean the Parents center and Soraya took me to many SW trainings..... It was awesome (only the trainings LOL). Now, the students are back to school and since the librarian doesn't have assistants yet, I am helping her out a bit. Also, Irma and Soraya told me to not get to comfortable at the library because they will need me once in a while at the parents center to help out with the meetings and events planning, that made me feel IMPORTANT :). So far I am having a great experience, I might be able to go to a classroom as a tutor but it all depends on the necessities of the librarian and Irma. My major is Social Work, so the skills I hope to gain at Rosa Parks that will help me in my career are not to take everything personally and communicate effectively with others. Personally, I hope to expand my professional network so I can learn from others how to manage life and work and at the same time continue to enjoy both.
ReplyDeleteWell I am doing my service at the Cesar Chavez Service Club under Carlos and Linda LeGerrete. Currently we are under training as Frida mentioned above, meeting every Friday @ Wilson Middle. We started in the summer during S.R.P. and I feel it has given me a real advantage to grasp the concept and values of the club. I've heard a lot of scholars mention how difficult or how much more work the club requires but honestly I really enjoy working with this non-profit organization being as I graduated from one. Friday I discovered that I will being doing my hours at Horsemann Middle and Central Elementary where I will be coordinating meetings with students an hour a week at each. I will also be at Roosevelt in the morning once a week. I also have had the chance to attend special events with them Carlos and Linda. I am hoping I can reach these children in a way where they find the values of the club are important to carry through with each day. As a self goal I will achieve in being dedicated and timely to the club as if it were a personal interest of mine.
ReplyDeleteMy service learning site is Rosa Parks Elementary School at City Heights. I am serving two professors as teacher assistance, Ms. Encinas, who is the kindergarten professor for bilingual kids and Mr. Robles, who is the professor who teaches advance Spanish for third grade students. My responsibilities are basically to assist the professor with any help they need and to help their students individually, as well as to help them with the class curse. My major is International Business with emphasis in Spanish so I am expecting to get as skills consistence, patience, persistence, and many other skill that will be helpful with my emphasis in Spanish. I would also try to connect with the person who is in charge of the management of the school funds or anyone who manages the “business” of the school to see what is like to be responsible of the school money.
ReplyDeleteFor Barrio Logan, I'm tutoring mainly 4th graders with their homework, consisting mostly of math and English. Responsibilities I have for that work site is to be a role model for the younger students and motivate them to be excited for their future education and going to college. And for San Diego High, last Friday I was just helping whoever needed it, but this Friday my main priorities will be working at the library and then helping a teacher with her 4th period class. My responsibilities in the high school will be sorting out books and working by the computer to check out students' books and interacting with the students in class with helping them with thinking critically. I've graded a lot of their notebook work, and wow. My 4th graders' work look way more professional than these guys, so I'm excited to help the high school students. Skills I expect to gain from my work sites are patience and social skills, such as being more open with people and finding creative ways to talk to each individual.
ReplyDeleteFor the Cesar Chavez Club, I'm going to be working with elementary and middle school kids to teach them the values of the program as well as the Farm Workers Union history. by doing this, the kids learn to be tolerant with one another regarding different opinions or even color. Sadly, i haven't been able to start because the schools that i have been assigned, haven't began yet. so far, all i have been doing is going to our weekly meetings in which we learn what the program is all about and how we are going to facilitate it. it seems like an interesting concept, instead of helping somebody else teach, we are the teachers. its something new. im hoping to gain better presentation skills. having to be in front of these kids as a leader, im going to have to make sure that i grasp their attention and keep them on track. also im going to have to be patient with them and make sure that i communicate effectively with kids and people in different age groups.
ReplyDeleteI am doing my service hours at Rosa Park Elementary in City Heights. I'll be assisting the school nurse with paper work and also making calls to parents if their child illness is severe so they can pick the child up. Well I want to be a nurse, so I'm hopping I learn to communicate better with people and most importantly to know what I am getting myself into and if it's a right career choice for me. I've not started working there yet due to my health issues, so I can't really write about my experience at the site, but I am very excited to start this week.:)
ReplyDeleteMy volunteering site is Mid City Pediatrics. I'm am serving the clinic
ReplyDeleteas well as some employees that work there. My duties as a volunteer is
to call parents and remind them that their child has an appointment on
a certain day. I have to be ready to translate in Spanish or English
as most of the population that goes there is Hispanic. What I expect
from this site is to get job experience because I have never had a
job. I have been volunteering there for the last three weeks and can
honestly say that I am much more confident in terms of dealing with
people. I had never used my Spanish skills and now that I have
communicated with Spanish speakers I feel like my Spanish has gotten
incredibly better. I also expect to gain more confidence in the work
place.I feel
like when I do have the confidence I will be able to handle more
interviews better.
The comment box finally decided to show!!! yaay lol
DeleteMy volunteering site is UCSD Baker Clinic. It's a run-free clinic that aims at giving free medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and optical treatment. It's run by 3 head doctors and a bunch of med-students. It's a pretty cool place to volunteer at. It gets me excited about my future in the medical field. My main job duty is being an interpreter for patients who speak spanish. I introduce myslef alongside with the med-student & we asses the patient. I'm allowed to go into the private room and see what the patient comes in for. It's a great feeling knowing I've helped someone. Through this site I hope to aquire great communication skills that will come in handy on a day-to-day basis.
ReplyDeleteMy work site is at BLCI I love it. My responsibilities are to help 4th and 5th graders with their homework. I think my role as a tutor is to inspire them to go to college. I really like what we do at the end of each day, we have a question for the group and it goes like this " Who wants to go to college?" and they answer " We Do!" that's my best part of the day. Also I like being responsible and being in charge of a group of wonderful kids.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t started my hours at my site which is Rosa Parks. I would like to get experience in computer work and the opportunity to get to know people there. I love working with kids but that has nothing to deal with my career. I want to go for criminal justice but I enjoy stay there and help the kids to understand what they don’t know. My expectations for the site are to learn from the teachers and experience new things.
ReplyDeleteMy site is At Rosa Parks Elementary as a Teacher’s assistant. My responsibilities as a T.A is to help the teacher on whatever she may need such as check on the children to make sure they are doing their work staying on task. I help kids with their number too. I help take them out to recess and to lunch and make sure that they stay safe. I expect to learn how kids are without their parents. I want to be an Adoption social worker or a kinder garden teacher and I can’t seem to make up my mind so I’m hoping that working in a kinder garden class will help me a little. Although both careers indicate working with kids.
ReplyDeleteI am going to do my hours at Mid-City Pediatric Clinic, but I haven't started yet. I haven't started to do my hours there because the lady (supervisor) wasn't sure if any other second-year scholars who used to do their hours there still want to do their hours there. However, she explained the tasks that I must complete when I volunteer there. I have to help the nurses with whatever they need. I have to help the nurse to hold the kids who will get a shot(s). In case of emergency, if people get hurt, I have to take them to the nurses. This year, I expect to gain some knowledge about what to do when the patients are sick and what it takes to become a good nurse.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm doing my hours at the fleet where I'm a gallery facilitator. My job is to mainly to help the guests with anything they might need. Well what I hope to gain from this experience is to improve on my communication skills all around. I really like doing my hours at the center and look forward to learning new things through out the time I'm at the fleet.
ReplyDeleteMy volunteering site is Lincoln High School. My site is really flexible with my hours, which is great because I get to focus more in my school work. So far, I have enjoyed my time at my volunteering site. I am helping the librarian who is a great person because she bought me a burrito. My responsibilities include organizing books and checking out books to students. It might sound tedious, but I am having a great time at Lincoln. In addition I also help in the main office. I assist Paulita in her office. For example, I help her organize papers. For this year, I am expecting to improve my communication skills with other people.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I haven't been able to go to my site yet due to catching up on my classes and my head injury but this Friday I will be heading down there first thing in the morning! I'm not going to be a victim, but I will own up to the responsibility of making my hours on time as well as doing my service for Price. As for right now I can say that my designated site is Rosa Parks, but I might ask to change to go to San Diego High because it's closer to City which helps me with gas. In terms of skill and personal/professional growth I need to be able to contact Rosa Parks as soon as possible to make sure they are aware of my change as well as dedicate at least one whole day towards them due to my unprofessional actions after not attending a couple of weeks for service hours. However within working at an elementary school I expect to learn patience and professional demeanor due to the children I will be setting an example for.
ReplyDeleteI am volunteering at San Diego High School, with the special ed teacher, along with the schools speech pathologist. I chose this site because I know I want to work with special ed, but I'm not sure from what angle yet. I am really taking my time to learn what their main focus is. I have not been to SDHS this month to work with them but I have been communicating and we are working on their club, previously in august I was helping in the office, because school was not in session. I really want to take my time to see their rolls so I can have a better idea of what path I would like to proceed.
ReplyDeleteI am currently volunteering at San Diego High for two of my former high school teachers. San Diego High was always my first choice because it's convenient (it's right next door!) and I want to be a high school art teacher. I am volunteering for Ms. Groves, my former art teacher, and Mrs. Reiss-Malone, my former English teacher. I have different responsibilities for each teacher (Ms. Groves even has a "Jamie List" of tasks for me), but they mostly revolve around grading student work. I have a lot of freedom because my teachers trust me. I hope to gain teaching experience and sort of get an idea of how I will eventually run my own classroom. Ms. Groves is very organized and structured when it comes to running her class, so I'm definitely going to become more OCD with my organization. Mrs. Reiss just adds balance to my life, she is so funny.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was doing community service I was volunteering at the Rublen H Fleet Science Center I choose this site because they had flexible hours and also because I fell in love with the staff when I had my interview. I was a gallery facilitator my responsibility were to facilitated the gallery's to see that evreything was working as it was supposed to and to answer any question a customer might have from any exhibit and tu just have fun! The skills I gain from this site was customer service and how to go up to a customer without being shy. This site helped me to grow more and to think oustide the box.
ReplyDeleteIn my service learning site, BLCI, I have been doing different task. Since my availability was only on fridays I am mostly helping Karina doing data entry and different office related tasks. In addition I talk to the parents about different events and programs related to the school, but I am planning also on doing other activities with the students from elementary to high school during weekends. I am expecting to develop my professional and social skills in terms of been involved in a professional institution and been around professionals like the professors and staff. I also want to improve my personal skill by having the interaction not only with the people working there but also with the students and parents that are often going to my site.
ReplyDeleteI am working at the Science Center and I am loving it! At time, I admit, it can get a bit redundant, but you have to remember that even though you've seen an exhibit day in and day out, for most of the patrons it's their first time so you have to approach each patron with the same enthusiasm as the previous. My responsibilities primarily consist of roaming the science center, and assisting patrons in understanding how to use the exhibits, and intrigue their interest in learning and science. I'll admit that the Science Center wasn't my first choice, but at the end of the day I had to make a decision between fitting all my classes into my schedule, or spending an extra semester at City. I am using this opportunity to not only enhance my interpersonal skills, as at time I can be shy, but also to learn more about science. Ultimately, my goal is to teach, and through working at the science center I am hoping to gain skills in explaining sometimes complex situations to children who are not able to process the information.
